Helsinki, Finland-based death metallers Azatoth bring their second EP, Ungodly Carnage<\/em>, proving the depth to the scene is seemingly endless. These youngsters have mastered the art of producing dense, riveting and fleshed out death metal that rumbles with menace.<\/p>\n

Following the short intro there\u2019s four exceptional little songs drenched in atmosphere and bridging the gap between old school stylings and modern yet fusty, doom-drenched catchiness. This is immediately apparent on \u2018Vomiting God\u2019s Remains\u2019 which boasts an eerie bell chime, melancholic soloing (which sadly succumbs to a fade out before it gets going) and the gruff vocal traits of Akseli Lindroos, whose guttural bellows bring further earthiness to what is already a dismal and foreboding work.<\/p>\n

As with numerous contemporary acts, Azatoth are still able to coat the faster moments in a grey haze of murkiness. This is evidenced on the gusts of \u2018Eschaton\u2019 where drummer Juuso H\u00e4m\u00e4l\u00e4inen really comes into his own, bashing away so the manic, gnawing entity of the guitars where Akseli\u2019s leads squirm between the punishing segments of Daniel Gamache\u2019s doomy riffs.<\/p>\n

For me, death metal needs to be something to get your teeth into even when it is at pace, and Azatoth show their maturity with the blazing \u2018Lunatic Butchery\u2019 that rattles to the spine of Joel Das\u2019s bass.<\/p>\n

The general feel of this thick, soupy and very much old school vibe is one which evokes images of putrid tombs, humid caverns and fumes of the dead. So what better soundtrack to experience than the grotesque hammering of \u2018Mortal Gods\u2019 to round up this frothing tapestry of horrors.<\/p>\n

Ungodly Carnage<\/em> is a solid death metal command sure to revive corpses and bring armies of the dead to your door.<\/p>\n
