This quartet of flesh-crawlers has bestowed upon us squalid, grotesque music since their 2019 demo which was followed by two split projects, and then a few months ago a two track promo demo tape which acted as a teaser for this fetid abomination.

As expected, this full-length release adds further sickening coatings to the already burgeoning yet bludgeoning death metal scene, and what you get here are seven tracks of guttural blast beats, doom-drenched chugging and enough boggy, cloying vocal silt to block your drains. For me, the demo releases were exceptional so it’s no surprise that the combo continues its foul expression.

‘Krypto Chronique II’ is the sort of hammering introductory track fans would have been gasping for, a blistering chugganaut of devastating weight and twisted, contorted riffing that casts off great lumps of manky flesh. There’s always that foul air of catchiness of Sedimentum, so those requiring slower slogs of sluggish perversion will not be disappointed although it’s fair to say the album is one great mashing mesh of obliterating heaviness that slurps with putridity.

A personal favourite amidst the gory gravy has to be the oozing ‘Excrétions Basaltiques’ with its toiling riffs and those vile percussive bangs which speed up nicely to accompany the unravelling cacophony. Admittedly, even with its crushing approach, there are whiffs of the formulaic, after all, a lot of bands are engaging us with similar, but certainly not identical designs (Tomb Mold, Mortiferum), but it’s also testament as to how hideous and bludgeoning the scene has become. Just listen to the hailing aggression of ‘Funestes Manifestations’ with that belligerent percussive drumming and flashes of Morbid Angel with the whammy perversity.

Everything about this album reminds one of oozing sewage littered with body parts and bulbous excrement. ‘Supplice’ aches and drones with repulsive, orgiastic discharge from its very bog-drenched guitar sound. It’s akin to a treacle waterfall cluttered with bones and rotten meat as the drums merely act as macabre stabs through the haze of buzzing flies and ground flesh. Meanwhile, the title track is a leaking odour of sombre whining as the melancholic chord mournfully nods to those bleak, smouldering horizons before the vocal growl introduces us to a laborious sluggish trickle. This thing lumbers so unhealthily that even when the speedier chimes clamber from the pit you’re already suffocating on dire fumes of cryptic mould.

Sedimentum are masters at creating dreadful atmospherics where harrowing rhythmic rolls and the sheer weight is what truly brings on the claustrophobia as thick, gloopy sediment clogs every vessel, leaving you as a bloated corpse ready to pop.

It’s often very difficult to describe a lot of this muggy, dank death metal that’s doing the rounds and I simply just recommend you spend some time with it and make your own judgement… if you survive its sodden horror that is.

Neil Arnold

SEDIMENTUMSuppuration Morphogénésiaque Me Saco un Ojo / Memento Mori (2022)Rating: 9/10 Audible carnage is upon us once again as Québec City death metal merchants Sedimentum rise again and finally delivers its debut album to the world.
