Although boasting just a brace of tracks, Call Of The Void is an incredible release boasting dark, catchy riffs, a menacing percussive spine and snappy vocal outbursts.

As ‘Hell On Earth’ oozes from the cracks with doomy aplomb you find yourself nodding to its foreboding groove. The track then ups its pace to a healthy trot before the scratchy vocals intervene. Even with such simplistic design you can’t pin a style on Kurse except the knowing that there is something distinctly evil going on within its contours. The rumbling bass, the almost blackened melody from the axe, the general pitch black feel… it’s all here and all encompassing. The track eventually reaches a punky hook merged with Gothic nuances, and one can almost hear the skirmish of bats as their deft wings echo from the vault.

The title track, which is far longer, begins like a lost, early-to-mid 80s thrash track, thrashing wildly before a mid-paced heap of chuggery comes into play. Again the blackened death strains are showcased; the quintet spooking with delicious riffs, thudding percussion and those harsh, throaty yelps.

An album of this sort of stuff will surely be one hell of a mesmeric feast, so guys, get to it so we can all become bewitched by the power of the Kurse.

Neil Arnold

KURSECall Of The Void EP Self-released (2022)Rating: 8/10 Bringing dollops of crust alongside their already deathly approach, Philadelphia’s Kurse slither from their hole to deliver their second EP after last year’s Cursed offering.
