This trio has existed since 2014 and Metal Baphomet is their second full-length studio album.

The outing opens with the intro ‘The Summoning’ featuring a Slayer-esque eeriness accompanied by strange wails and voices before the combo shifts into ‘Evil Awake’. The track is a black thrash nightmare of further creepiness boasting satanic cries, speeding guitars and an old school hellish vibe that harkens back to the first black metal waves.

For some, the music may appear as generic and derivative, and there is certainly a lack of variety. But this adds to the underground charms as tunes such as ‘The Truth Behind The Curtains’, ‘The Burning Eyes Of Evil’ et al, all seem to melt into one smoking cauldron of dungeon hostility.

Vocally, and I use the word loosely, frontman Nattens Oldskull emits mournful cries and at times comedic yelps, but on tracks such as ‘Sentenced To Suffer’ there is more structure – a blackened speed approach with mid tempo grating.

Elsewhere, ‘Hollow Shell’ is utterly impure blasphemy, and ‘March Of The Damned’ cuts in with truly sinister riffing, while another favourite, ‘Sonars Of War’, boasts eerie chants.

Primitive is an extremely infectious band once given time. Their rough ‘n’ ready brand of blackened metal will appeal to those with a penchant of underground familiarity and to those who like their metal rusty, oily and, above all, evil.

Neil Arnold

PRIMITIVEMetal Baphomet Murder (2021)Rating: 7.5/10 From the pits of São Paulo scurries one of metal’s most evil sounding bands; the wild, raw and unholy Primitive.
