This six-track 35-minute affair follows on from the impressive 2019 demo, Crawling Through Cadavers; a grey blast of cold, dank air with a consuming vocal sound akin to some foul underworld demon spouting out hot blasts of fire from its lungs.

While melodic at its core, this is very much crushing, cold death metal from the region of Lower Saxony – bleak, stirring heaps of swirling gloom that form into one great, thickening cloud of pungent fury.

Opener ‘Word Of God’ starts off the flurry of black snow as this mysterious combo grates and grinds its way through the blizzard by way of creating fast battering apocalyptic dissonance. Slower passages emerge just to swallow you whole like some heavily fumed fog, with the band chugging and spewing like so many of today’s grizzly death acts seem to do.

Listen carefully and you’ll hear structure within those grey haze gales, but for the most part that is death metal that just churns in sickly fashion. Musically, the levels gained are inaccessible to most and one can only imagine what sort of minds could create such thick, billowing strands of ghastly darkness.

‘Masters Corpse’ remains as obscure as every chunk of consuming flatulence. A scathing grey guitar tone emerges from the gloop as the percussive monster just rattles like some unknown entity of clamour. All I envision is a room of dust and smog as the vocals act as mere escapes of gas from hidden, corroding pipes.

Track titles such as ‘Bloodied Sacred Scriptures’ and the instrumental ‘Hell Arisen’ suddenly become irrelevant as the band clanks and clangs its way through the slurry, out of the cess pit and into your nightmares as another appalling, suffocating chug leaks from the cracks like bloodied soot. The title track heaves in depressive, suffocating fashion and drags your entrails across the floor with its sudden burst of wintry speed.

Necrochaos is part of that death metal scene that has existed for some time now, whereby the youth of today somehow manages to construct great, flabby vacuums of poisonous liquid which forms vast smoking barriers and gaseous columns of anguish which at any moment could explode and take us all down with it. Akin to grinding machinery, ‘Mortal Angels Descent’ just weaves smoggy patterns of hatred and disgust to the point of bludgeoning doomscapes.

‘Last Prayer’ spits out chunks of twisted iron and burps further noxious toxins into your eardrums as that remote, dissonant guitar tone streaks like wire into your veins and fills your arteries with lead. Worrying then that all that is on offer is the work of one chap named Eugene, a demented individual that no doubt resides in a blast furnace but creates his noise from the confines of an industrial landscape beneath his bathtub.

Necrochaos is grim, foreboding and all consuming death gloom that should be sealed shut, in quarantine, forevermore, because this sort of putrid intensity and sickening smog just isn’t good for the lungs or the mind, let alone the ears.

Neil Arnold

NECROCHAOSMortal Angels Descent Godz Ov War Productions (2021)Rating: 7.5/10 Erupting from some murky furnace comes Germany’s Necrochaos with its debut blot on the landscape.
