We salvaged a few riffs from a track that we demoed in May of 2017 with the working title of ‘the moody idiot’, and added three new parts that we wrote just after Skot [Hamilton, bass] found out that his father died. The riffs are like scraping bones and metal together, and the lyrics are some of the most demeaning and harsh of the entire album. Skot claims the song does not make him feel good by association, and is consequently his favourite song on the record.”

KEN mode issued seventh full-length studio album Loved on August 31st, 2018 through Season Of Mist (excluding Canada). New Damage Records scheduled Canadian release to take place the same day.

The outing can be streaming in its entirety via YouTube below.

Matthewson added: “With Loved our entire album was influenced by the cover piece – ‘Happy Person Having A Pleasant Conversation In Public’, which Randy [Ortiz] debuted Sept 26th, 2016. We knew from the moment he posted it that we needed this to be the cover to our next work – Loved, which we had earmarked shortly after we’d finished recording Success.

“For Randy, we know the piece is a bit of an encapsulation of his relationship with sleep paralysis, but for us, it’s come to represent the face of ‘responsible’ adult life in 2017/2018. In late 2016 he printed stickers for the piece, just as a bit of a promotion – but I kept one of these stickers on my dresser from that moment on… our eyes meeting every morning upon my waking; every day, for the entire year we worked on Loved.

“I felt like this ritual encouraged an artistic arms race, where we had to create an album that would live up to the ecstatic nastiness of this image. We were also just generally fed up with much of what life in 2017/18 has come to represent, working in the music industry in general, and wanted to create something wholly noisy and ugly, yet with an underlying humor – because if you’re not laughing these days, you’re probably crying.”

Loved was recorded in January 2018 with producer Andrew Schneider at Private Ear Recording in Winnipeg. Mixing was also handled by Schneider, while the outing was mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering in Chicago, Illinois.

Cover artwork was created by Randy Ortiz.

The track listing is as follows;

01. ‘Doesn’t Feel Pain Like He Should’
02. ‘The Illusion Of Dignity’
03. ‘Feathers & Lips’
04. ‘Learning To Be Too Cold’
05. ‘Not Soulmates’
06. ‘Very Small Men’
07. ‘This Is A Love Test’
08. ‘Fractures In Adults’
09. ‘No Gentle Art’

KEN mode’s line-up is as follows;

Jesse Matthewson (vocals and guitars)
Skot Hamilton (bass)
Shane Matthewson (drums)

Music videos were also filmed for the tracks ‘Doesn’t Feel Pain Like He Should’ and ‘Feathers & Lips’.
