What can I add that hasn\u2019t already been said about Candlemass as a live act? They seem to exude total confidence on stage and even though they\u2019re still only playing the little ol\u2019 Marquee, they never forget the diehard fans out front.<\/p>\n

The Marquee was packed for tonight\u2019s show, and the wide spectrum that the Swedish band attract was instantaneously obvious. Gothics right up to the hardest thrashers were going wild as \u2018Marche Funebre\u2019 announced the band\u2019s arrival. Vocalist Messiah Marcolin immediately dominated the stage \u2013 he agrees that his voice may over dominate Ancient Dreams<\/em>, the band\u2019s latest LP \u2013 but on the evidence of tonight, don\u2019t let that concern you folks; a voice like this should not be ignored. \u2018Mirror Mirror\u2019 who\u2019s the finest of the all?<\/p>\n

Candlemass had the crowd in their hands, but the greatest accolade I can give them is that they built their set beautifully, switching from new material to Epicus Doomicus Metallicus<\/em> classics and to Nightfall<\/em><\/a> tracks, like \u2018Bewitched\u2019 and \u2018Dark Are The Veils Of Death\u2019; almost legendary riffs from the Candlemass text book. My only quibble was the guitar of Mats Bj\u00f6rkman on some of the slow bits when the tuning strayed, but the band as a whole were on top form.<\/p>\n

Candlemass could never be matched; imagine somebody trying to copy \u2018Solitude\u2019 or \u2018Samarithan\u2019, it would sound so pathetic. The only thing that saddened me was that the band closed with a Black Sabbath<\/a> medley; doing something I thought they\u2019d put behind them. That will no doubt fuel the debate again as to whether Candlemass = Black Sabbath? No way mate, Candlemass are much blacker; \u2018Solitude\u2019 is so black it would make Ozzy Osbourne go back to sucking dummies. A night to remember\u2026 long may they continue.<\/p>\n
