Looks wise, Fiona kills. Music wise? Well, I think she has the voice, but I think maybe the material in places could be better. That’s not to say that there aren’t any high spots on this debut.

‘Hang Your Heart On Me’ is a good opener, nice power chords with keyboard fills. This number could make a good single. ‘Talk To Me’ is an old Shanghai number co-written by ex-Airbourne man Beau Hill, who at this moment is busily producing the new Kix album. This again is good rock music, but I could have done without the sax playing. ‘You’re No Angel’ is excellent and my favourite cut on the LP; crushing power chords mingle with Fiona’s powerful voice. Bobby Messano (ex-Starz / Frank And The Knockouts) turns in some hot guitar pyrotechnics on this one; he does prove to be an attribute to this album and his guitar fits perfectly with Fiona’s vocal range.

‘James’, the side two opener, sees Fiona almost doing a Joan Jett impression. Love the cowbell drumming from Joe Franco. ‘Love Makes You Blind’ is a moving semi-ballad with some well structured keyboard passages at the chorus. The ‘Na Na Song’ closes this LP and is absolutely disastrous. The mention of ‘Na Na’ a thousand times at least makes this an absolute low spot on the LP. This number is terrible.

Sure, Fiona is gonna be big but I’m looking to the next LP for when she starts challenging the likes of Teri DeSario and Lisa Dal Bello. Finally, it’s nice to see that former Centaurus vocalist is still around – yes, the Centaurus vocalist Louie Merlino does back-up vocals on this LP.

Kelv Hellrazer

Review taken from Metal Forces, Issue 10 (1985)

FIONAFiona Atlantic (1985)Rating: 7/10 The Fiona in question is Fiona Flanagan, another female vocalist in the Pat Benatar vein.
