Well, this one slipped on to the racks with barely a whimper. With original vocalist Vince Neil now firmly back in the band, it seemed that the only step to take was a backwards one, something which appeared to displease drummer Tommy Lee who doesn\u2019t feature on the record; although Lee\u2019s personal issues didn\u2019t help either. M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce<\/a> recruited former Ozzy Osbourne skinsman Randy Castillo, who does a more than adequate job on this opus.<\/p>\n

New Tattoo<\/em> is, in my opinion, Cr\u00fce\u2019s most underrated record, an 11-track album that sees the band doing what they do best… making rock \u2019n\u2019 roll.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m unsure how much influence Vince Neil had on this back-to-basics sound, but long gone are the fuzzy dynamics that littered the previous record,
\nGeneration Swine<\/em><\/a> (1997). This is simply a stripped down, sleazy platter that nods heavily to the band\u2019s early days, particularly on glam stompers such as \u2018Punched In The Teeth By Love\u2019, \u2018Hell On High Hells\u2019 and party anthem \u2018Porno Star\u2019.<\/p>\n

Suddenly it\u2019s M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce by numbers to some extent, the album fleshed out by Mick Mars\u2019 ever improving licks, and although bassist Nikki Sixx\u2019s lyrics may sound as if they\u2019ve been wrenched from the mid-80s, this isn\u2019t an album of filler… far from it.<\/p>\n

The token ballad is the title track, and while the bubble-gum rock of \u20181st Band On The Moon\u2019 and the more sincere and sweeping \u2018Hollywood Ending\u2019 may lack the brute force of previous albums, this is true Cr\u00fce. Even so, New Tattoo<\/em> still didn\u2019t really fit comfortably into the metal scene at the time, as bands such as Slipknot, System Of A Down and Avenged Sevenfold proved to be more popular with the kids. Thankfully however, by sticking to their guns, and refusing to bow down to trends, M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce soldiered on, breathing new life into some of the older songs in a live setting.<\/p>\n

Sadly, it would take several years for another studio album to emerge (2008\u2019s Saints Of Los Angeles<\/em><\/a>), but for me, New Tattoo<\/em> is a vital cog in a wheel that somehow keeps on turning. While none of the tracks on this record will ever feature in a M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce \u201chits\u201d package, this is still a solid metal record that will please any true Cr\u00fce fan.<\/p>\n
