Similarly designed, at times, to fellow veterans Grave Digger, Sinner have shed blood, sweat and tears with a heavy metal career spanning five decades, consistently issuing a wealth of hard rockin’ albums that a majority of bands could only dream of.

And so, here we are, the curtain has fallen to the soundtrack of Boom Bang Goodbye, an opus which boasts all the hallmarks of the band we’ve grown up with. No frills as such, just good, anthemic and often volcanic heavy metal delivered straight from the heart with an admirable professionalism. There’s no shying away from subtlety either. Sinner has always provided a veritable feast of fiery melodies and there’s an abundance here.

Out of the gates first is ‘Dreams Can Come True’, a solid track with a chugging rhythm to accompany the vocal fire of Renan Zonta – one of several guest musicians contributing to the album. It’s actually a tad underwhelming as an opener; the lead work is strong and the chorus is catchy yet somewhat predictable, but then again, I never expected anything remotely unorthodox. However, the album does begin to boil, especially with the heavier tracks, although there’s no lack of sentiment throughout as one would expect from a reflective Mat Sinner.

‘Wait’, which features Michael Bormann (ex-Bonfire / ex-Jaded Heart) on vocals, is, according to Mat, “… representative of the whole album”, a rich, textured and soulful rocker featuring excellent percussion from Moritz Müller, who first appeared with the band over ten years ago. Ever reliable axe man Alex Scholpp drives the album on further as ‘Hellbreaker’, featuring Ronnie Romero’s Ronnie James Dio-styled tone, trudges with a darker premise, while the aptly titled ‘Power’, starring Primal Fear’s Magnus Karlsson on vocals and axe, showcases further weight but without sacrificing melody, and the hooks throughout the platter are instant.

‘Under The Moonlight’ provides another fiery traipse, but what is evident throughout this outing is the seesaw effect as the band moves effortlessly from semi-balladic sways and molten heavy rock like ‘Leave It All Behind’ to the AOR-styled slab of ‘All Night Long’. Elsewhere, axe man Mathias Dieth (Dirkschneider & The Old Gang) brings steel to the riveting ‘Born To Run’, which is fronted by Eclipse main man Erik Martensson, Saga voice Michael Sadler adds his personality to the poppy ‘Turn The Page’, and Bormann returns on ‘Road To Remember’.

There’s plenty to dissect here, but enough quality to please all. Sinner has left behind an impressive discography to last a lifetime and beyond, and Boom Bang Goodbye should be a celebration rather than a tearful farewell.

Neil Arnold

SINNER Boom Bang Goodbye Reigning Phoenix Music (2026) Rating: 8/10 With an astonishing 20 full-length studio albums under their belt, Mat Sinner decides that Boom Bang Goodbye will be the last chapter for German stalwarts Sinner.
