Funerary Outlook is responsible for such slithering through the trees of Green Bay. With its garish artwork, debut full-length platter Temporal Mutations slots in nicely into today’s modern old school worship. It’s an outing carved from walls of gelatinous flab, yet honed in to a slightly more refined sound of festering.

Awash with enormous cosmic riffs, Temporal Mutations belongs in the same otherworldly realm as Canada’s Tomb Mold. Each track grumbles with a rolling, poisonous air as a monolithic aura of foreboding descends like a suffocating pea soup fog. ‘Collisions Of Embryonic Worlds’ epitomises the monstrous plateaus this four-piece are willing to explore. The riffs throughout are constructed as gargantuan shifting plates, and it’s these foundations which everything else is built upon – slime-coated behemoths which can unexpectedly move with pace as the slightly angular tremor of ‘Leering Weary’ pulses with the heartbeat of percussion and the effective vocal gurgles.

‘Akashic Terror’ is a lethal concoction of spewed vocals, choppy riffs and bludgeoning percussion, taking notes from earlier cut ‘Spellcaster’ which features guest vocals from Alexander Sason of Undeath, so one can imagine what sort of wretched abomination is conjured. Everything sounds chunky yet fine tuned and after a few listens I couldn’t help but compare this album to 2025’s Last Wretch album, Abject Cruelty. Each track is compacted into chunks of vomit; guttural blows which marinate in their own cosmic decay.

Temporal Mutations is not an album that is as complex as you would imagine, the combo is quite content to bulldoze rather than befuddled, but hidden within its layers are some interesting twists and melodies which hook into your brain. Lengthy 14 minute closer ‘The Pyre That Calls My Name’ boasts doomy elements, groaning and grinding within its cosmic bluster. The drums and bass provide dense walls of gritty smog, the depths grumbling with an esoteric turmoil. The cacophonous swirls of the riffs join with the everlasting miasmic vocal signals, the end result being a beefy bubbling stew of modern drudgery between Tomb Mold and Hyperdontia.

In spite of such cosmic clouds being wafted around, there’s nothing inaccessible or jarring about the rhythms here. Instead, Funerary Outlook bellows to a familiar template in an era where such brutal rambling is all the rage.

Neil Arnold

FUNERARY OUTLOOK Temporal Mutations Self-released (2026) Rating: 7/10 Can you hear the strange bubbling noise peppering the Wisconsin landscape?
