With the thrash genre reverting back to type (mostly Bay Area crunch or Teutonic spite ‘n’ steel) over the last few decades, bands such as Canada’s Warsenal have prospered. Their direct brand of savagery has kept them in business since their first demo back in 2012, and since then the trio has improved with each outing, the result being this speeding gem.

Boasting a bucket load of snap, especially in the vocals of guitarist Mathieu Rondeau, the album fizzes with dollops of Teutonic fury bolstered further by the razor-sharp axework. Yes, it’s all very familiar as touches of Vektor toy with Destruction and Razor and all manner of the more contemporary thrash acts doing the rounds, but I commend the guys for the precision and energy; Warsenal being a tight yet busy outfit that injects confident technicality.

Endless Beginnings… isn’t short of ideas. The leads spiral like well controlled yet sizzling fireworks, leaving scorch marks in their trail. But, let’s just cut out the convoluted and get on with it. ‘Mass Grave Mass’ kicks the album off and is a fiery denizen that snaps and scurries as one would expect from a bunch of ravenous thrashers. Hints of old Kreator merge with a more contemporary flash of aggression, the guitars in particular spiralling and straining at the leash like rabid hounds.

‘Flying Fortress’ is a swashbuckling dose of speed metal fury which sounds like a hyper Saxon meets Accept but more clean cut as a Teutonic spine runs through its agile body. Warsenal rarely strays from its hasty path as racing bass lines rapidly team up with tirades of sprinting percussion. Strangely though, in spite of its snappy whiplash delivery, Endless Beginnings… does feel a bit long at a shade over 50 minutes.

A majority of the nine tracks offered would have benefitted greatly from some trimming, like ‘Feeding The Wildfire’, ‘Phantom Hope’, ‘Onward To Our Death’ and the title track, but almost everything here runs five minutes or over, the best slab being the aforementioned title cut. The slow warm up is typical 80s thrash in its design, but once it gets going there’s some pure metallic chugs to savour and some lovely lead work.

It’s far from being a brash thrash exercise. Accessible and subtler melodies litter the record, but those craving wild, snappy Vektor-styled executions will lap up songs such as ‘The Numbening’, while the less hardened souls will enjoy the gradual build-up of tracks such as ‘Dusk Dwellers’, which effortlessly fuses steady thrash undulations with slightly angular and thorny passages. That’s not to say that this is an abrasive platter, but Warsenal successfully combines lethal rushes (‘Onward To Our Death’ and ‘Dawn Mowers’) with traditional metal potency.

Even with its Teutonic influences, Endless Beginnings… is very much a thrash record for the now and one that will be seen as a worthy addition to the ever increasing number of sound-alikes.

Neil Arnold

WARSENAL Endless Beginnings… Massacre (2026) Rating: 7/10 Although this isn’t their first album, Warsenal’s latest has been causing positive ripples on the thrash metal underground.
