With artists such as Night Of The Vampire making headway with their unorthodox brand of black metal n’ synth, the return of Philadelphia’s Necrosexual is welcomed.

Having released their debut full-length platter Grim-1 in 2018, Necrosexual has maintained its high levels of strangeness. Still led by The Necrosexual himself (who garnered a cult following on YouTube for interviewing heavy metal bands), Road To Rubble’s marrying of shock rock and black metal may be perceived either as goofy or ghoulish, but either way it makes for an interesting listen.

Daubed in corpse paint and wielding a flickering candelabra, The Necrosexual leads us through the labyrinth of punky nuances, black death snarls and King Diamond-esque atmospherics. I’m unsure if the appeal would still be there without the makeup, but Road To Rubble features enough strong riffs to keep you hooked.

I guess it’s the sneers which give the band that blackish streak. Opener ‘High Times In Hell’ showcases the seamless marrying of straight up heavy metal with that gnarly coating. The clan of cave dwellers are more than adept at injecting some punk too alongside flecks of thrash. The steady blackened riffs on ‘The Brimstone Brothel’ add further grit to proceedings, so even with the strong fragrance of theatre and devilish schlock there are ghoulishly serious undertones.

‘Lubricator’ is a direct billowing thrash outburst, the drums are as ravenous as the vocal spits, but in contrast ‘All Roads Lead To Rubble’ boasts a mid-paced punky metal rhythm, with the same being said for ‘Nocturnal Ignition’ where I’d add a bit of King Diamond too. So, the cauldron is essentially created by a potent Gothic ingredient but spiced with pinches of heavy rock; for example, the sleazy swaggering ‘Damned Romance’. ‘Kiss The Knife’ boasts similar strutting coolness – the melody is infectious as are the haunting moans of “Kiss the kniiiiiife!”.

At times here I’m reminded of Devil Master. But whatever your thirst, Necrosexual will no doubt attempt to quench it with their trashy and humour-peppered lashing of metal.

Neil Arnold

NECROSEXUAL Road To Rubble Black Metal Archives (2026) Rating: 7/10 It’s time to return to Weirdsville, otherwise known as the band Necrosexual.
