Damn, these US rockers were on quite the roll from 2010 to 2015, releasing three strong albums, and then they just evaporated, seemingly on the crest of a wave.

Anyhow, Christian Mistress is back with another winner in the form of Children Of The Earth which I’ll tuck straight into with opener ‘City Of Gold’. This is a straight up ballsy rocker that drips with swagger thanks to the cool vocals of Christine Davis. Admittedly formulaic, ‘City Of Gold’ is that archetypal rock n’ roller fizzing with a metal edge and hardened further by Reuben Storey’s drums. It’s a song that sets the tone marvellously, matched elsewhere by the similarly designed ‘Demon’s Night’ which sounds like a metallic Blondie!

These upbeat, struttin’ grooves are aplenty throughout the album with the stripped back New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bile of ‘Death Blade’, the bass led n’ hip rocker ‘Love Of The World’, and the fiery trudge of ‘Mythmaker’ with its traditional metal glaze.

Strangely, a lot of the songs here have a demo feel and I’m not sure if that’s just the production, but the result is a sort of new wave, poppy punk feel occasionally thickened by a harder rock edge. ‘Voiceless’ is a good example of these aesthetics as is ‘Shadow’, both easy on the ear and rippling with simple melodious rhythms and driven by the fresh and free axe work.

I really enjoyed this record and it prompted me to revisit previous Christian Mistress albums so I could once again revel in the underrated joys of this coven.

Neil Arnold

CHRISTIAN MISTRESSChildren Of The Earth Cruz Del Sur Music (2025)Rating: 8/10 Returning to the fold three years ago after ceasing to exist in 2016, Christian Mistress finally dishes out a fourth full-length outing.
