However, since then I’ve somewhat lost track of Whipstriker’s output.

Involved in an obscene amount of split projects, alongside a batch of albums and a few EPs means that this is one of the most prolific acts out there. Cry Of Extinction is the fifth full-length platter and once again we are treated to more Venom aping which wore off several years ago. The problem here also is that while in the past Whipstriker albums have been relatively short, this one extends to a few minutes shy of 40, so by the time I’m halfway through I’m already starting to switch off. Even the cover rendition of Destruction’s ‘Satan’s Vengeance’, although admirable, is just more evidence of the generic black leather n’ studs worship we’ve come to expect here.

Elsewhere, we get swatted by the usual claptrap of the steadier ‘Six-Eyes Crow Division’, the equally oxidized slog of ‘WWVI’, the Motörhead jacked ‘Heartrippers’ and closer ‘Military Scum’, an overlong Venom clone that’s demonic yet derivative. Sure, if you like this sort of aggressive blizzard of banality then swallow a few cans and enjoy the ride, but if, like me, you’ve heard it all before, then I just don’t think Cry Of Extinction does anything remotely entertaining.

There’s certainly some malicious melodies entwined within the hellish mix of d-beat butchery and raw blasphemy, but seeing such ancient blackened noise churned out decades after its birth just isn’t as cool as some make it out to be.

Neil Arnold

WHIPSTRIKERCry Of Extinction Hells Headbangers (2025)Rating: 6/10 When this Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-based act emerged as a one man band in 2010 with debut album Crude Rock N’ Roll there was something refreshing about the brand of rusty speed metal.
