Firstly, I just want to say how cool the album cover is, depicting a city smouldering under blood orange skies. It certainly makes a change from all the silly cartoon covers. Anyway,

Crimes Against Humanity is 35 minutes of solid melodic thrash, the sort that you could put alongside the likes of Xentrix – the band even includes a cover of the Xentrix track ‘Balance Of Power’ alongside a rendition of Children Of Bodom’s ‘Needled 24/7’.

With no gimmicks, Unharvested Thrash begins with the steady chugs of ‘Carry On’. Jonathan Jackson’s vocals are simple yet lined with grit snaps, as is his guitar work which results in crisp driving riffs. There are elements of crossover spattered throughout the album: ‘Lost’ has a faint punky upbeat stance to its groove and maybe even a sprig of hardcore, more so on the streetwise barks. More than anything though this is an album steeped in melody.

Whereas a lot of thrash can be extremely sniping or serrated, even with the edgy vocals the music here rarely gets aggressive. ‘See Another Day’ features some sublime axe work that wouldn’t appear out of place on a traditional metal record, while ‘Fire In Your Eyes’ exhibits some hardcore yet upbeat riffage. However, it is a shame the vocals seem to dominate the mix, meaning that the album is often at odds with itself. I still enjoyed this though and with a bit of fine tuning Unharvested Thrash could become a force on the scene.

Neil Arnold

UNHARVESTED THRASHCrimes Against Humanity Self-released (2024)Rating: 6/10 Manchester, England-based thrashers Unharvested Thrash hit us where it hurts with their debut full-length offering.
