When opening track ‘Sewer Rot’ hits I could’ve sworn somebody had filled my speakers with fragments of bone ash. I knew I was in for a filthy ride but ‘Sewer Rot’ morbidly gushes like a foul mix of Autopsy and Bolt Thrower, regularly choking on its own fetid gasps of horror to the macabre wine of greyed out instrumentation.

Murky and maniacal, Long Live The Rot exudes such pungent riffs and solos that one can feel the spores of black mould hooking into the lungs. The vile trudge of ‘Massive Maggot Swarm’ speaks of “eyeballs bursting”, “reducing the fresh carcass to bone and hair” as “blowflies lay their eggs in the rotting meat” to a sluggish grinding riff siphoned straight from the bowel swamp. Such pus-ridden and pulverising purulence leaks continuously from this blood-soaked wreckage of a sound as Rotpit provides a steady deluge of decomposed hammering (‘Eat Or Be Eaten’) alongside blast beat bludgeoning (‘Tunnel Rat’) and manly mulch (‘Funeral Mock’).

With every step each instrument wades waist high through gut muck, rolling laboriously like tubs of thick fat and spurned on by the gurgling of Ralf Hauber (Revel In Flesh, Heads For The Dead). There’s a lot of rot worship within the confines of this opus; ‘The Triumph Of Rot’ is a hideous juggernaut that transforms into a gory gallop, ‘Long Live The Rot’ feasts on its own rhythmic decaying convulsions and ‘We Rot’ lumbers like a despondent critter carrying a back full of giant cysts. Even brief outro ‘OutRot’ pukes up further demented hammering. It’s all here if you get your kicks from rotten death metal that’s sure to bring the dead back to life.

Neil Arnold

ROTPITLong Live The Rot War Anthem / Selfmadegod (2024)Rating: 8/10 A year after their Let There Be Rot debut full-length album, Swedish/German trio Rotpit slithers from its tomb with an arsenal of 35 minutes of gangrenous slop.
