Lacking any sort of atmosphere and charging away like a generic basement project, this six-track debut EP is somewhat flimsy in design. The drums are awful so I’m assuming they are a machine – well, I hope so as it may excuse the quality – and most of the riffs are bland and uninspiring.

There was a time when quite a few low-budget UK death metal bands sounded like this – rushed, generic and lacking weight – and so it’s a shame that Splattervision suffers the same issues. ‘Cemetery Disembowelment’ kicks off with a brief horror film sample before a steady charge of mediocre death metal ensues.

Sadly, there’s nothing here to warrant any further attention as SplatterVision embark on a routine procession with ‘Video-drome’ and ‘Secreting Life’, both better off suited to the mid-90s doldrums consisting of mechanical sounding drums and all too familiar grunts.

Damn, I never expected Splattervision to reinvent the death metal genre, but the lack of creativity here results in such a banal expression. ‘Anthropophagous’ starts well with its sinister slow riff, but once the pace is injected it’s just back to the same old dynamics. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some old school stodge, but as ‘Mausoleum Murders’ bleeds into ‘Yaujta’ the lack of imagination is once again evident leaving me to feel that this EP is more moribund rather than morbid.

Neil Arnold

SPLATTERVISIONSplattervision EP Iron Fortress (2024)Rating: 5/10 Clearly inspired by horror movies, Splattervision is an Ohio-based duo who I expected more from.
