Dethropia is a Finnish foursome which formed three years ago and Good For Nothing is the band’s debut full-length offering. This record features a deadly dose of eight gnarly songs that snarl with such a vigour.

The opening title track is such a snappy composition formed by the vocal snarls of Olli Tähtinen and the sneering guitar tone from Pete Markkanen, alongside the equally rampant drums of Matti Ylikärppä. In fact, because the energy of the album, Dethropia makes for quite a refreshing experience, particularly with the ominous opening of ‘Under A Brooding Sky’ and the immense groove-laden chugs of ‘Fires Of Dystopia’.

There is plenty of variation within the more textbook attacks; ‘Sunless Place’ traipses with a lot of traditional metal nuances, and ‘Scorched Earth Tactics’ follows a similar path as for the most part this is quite the mid-tempo piece of work and yet boasts a layer of grit. I also enjoy the way a lot of these songs start out, creating suspenseful atmosphere before the metallic onslaught. Recommended thrash.

Neil Arnold

DETHROPIAGood For Nothing Self-released (2024)Rating: 7/10 This looks like a death metal album but does in fact veer towards thrash that is ruled by the rattling bass of Henri Herlevi.
