Best experienced through headphones, Inferno reels of damp thuds but above all a black stinking speed that drips with a black metal first wave menace alongside the savage approach of early Sepultura and Mutilator. Although this is a fast, primordial and deadly record it resonates with an impending doom as each chord reaches into the cavernous gloom of its own instrumental morbidity.

Admiration, however, most go to the melodious streaks on the album, particularly with a song like ‘Blood Worship’ which is dark more rhythmic compared to, say, ‘The Birth Of The Immortal Evil’, which kicks the album off but has a far hastier premise. ‘Blair’ is another favourite and initially veers towards a death metal chug, while sandwiched at the heart of the album is the scathing ‘Evil’ and the rapid epic that is the title track. There is plenty of old Sodom and Kreator on board too in those feral snaps, especially on those classic black speed outbursts like ‘Invoke The Lord’. Inferno is a fiendishly cool release.

Neil Arnold

SPEEDKILLERInferno Helldprod (2024)Rating: 8/10 The band’s moniker pretty much tells you what you’re going to get here; blasphemous Brazilian black thrash.
