A decade after their last official recordings, Rio de Janeiro-based maniacs Farscape have returned and are set to rip off a few ears with their primeval metal.

This volatile batch of songs charge like a hostile mix of old classic Sepultura combined with vintage Teutonic sadism. The vocals of guitarist Witchcaptor are nasty snipes which are matched by the rawness of the guitars. It has that distinctive sort of organic harshness on the axework and a vicious percussive duelling with the bass. Slip this on the stereo in 1985 and you’d probably marvel at its underground spits, but let’s praise it in 2023 for being a scowling outing.

For me, the best track is the opening title cut due to its strong vintage Kreator vibe, particularly in the dry, snappy vocals and the zipping nature of the instrumentation. Streaks of Whiplash and dollops of Destruction, Farscape rarely puts the brakes on as ‘Miss Violence’ and ‘Captivity Of Souls’ whizz by. However, it’s not just a sonic blur as exhibited with the melodic tweaks throughout, but if you like your thrash zany and hyper then get a load of this.

The combination of classic and familiar styles work, mostly because of the aggression, but some thrash just works and that’s due to the chemistry between the members. Farscape haven’t set out to experiment or reinvent the wheel, their aim is simple… to rip and tear like a shoal of starving piranhas.

Neil Arnold

FARSCAPEPurged And Forgotten Dying Victims Productions (2023)Rating: 8/10 How about some Brazilian thrash to clear away the cobwebs?
