Back in the 80s the band released three tidy efforts – Coney Hatch (1982), Outa Hand (1983) and Friction (1985) – then in 1992 a compilation of those before a fourth outing, Four, in 2013.

A whole decade has passed and suddenly the poppy track ‘It’s About A Girl’ is rattling around my head as if the band has never been away. It’s hard to believe that back in the halcyon days of heavy metal Coney Hatch were touring with the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but whichever line-up the band operates with they have remained engaging.

This new outing, which is essentially a live experience, brings the usual catchy rock streaked with pop and at times AOR aesthetics, but it is a must have due to the inclusion of two new studio songs, the already mentioned ‘It’s About A Girl’ and ‘Heaven’s On The Other Side’ which nods like a warmer and less serrated AC/DC.

It’s great to hear the band is writing again, just a shame then that after such a wait we are only treated to a brace of new songs. However, hearing live renditions again of some of the band’s well known numbers like ‘Monkey Bars’, ‘We Got The Night’, ‘Blown Away’ and ‘This Ain’t Love’ is always a pleasure.

I blow hot and cold when it comes to live albums but one does feel that this one was due. Postcards From Germany also reminds fans not only of the quality of Coney Hatch’s live shows but the fact they are still hanging around and writing good songs.

Neil Arnold

CONEY HATCHPostcard From Germany EX1 (2023)Rating: 8/10 Canadian rockers Coney Hatch have always been somewhat of a commercial mystery to me.
